Biblical Visions

Biblical Visions

After the remarkable vision of the Moving Hills, I began to read more about visions in the Bible. There are far too many visions in our Bible to discuss here, since this book is about visions by ordinary people. Those in the Bible are clearly seen and reported by extraordinary people.

Yet, as I moved forward in my visual experiences with God, I began to see some relationships to what I was seeing that helped explain what the ancients saw, and to comment on some of these may help the reader to understand what I saw as well.

. . . he said, “Listen to my words: “When a prophet of the LORD is among you, I reveal myself to him in visions, I speak to him in dreams.  Num 12:6 (NIV)

Now don’t take me wrong – I am not a prophet in any way, shape, or form.   The purpose of the verse above is to show you how God spoke to the prophets of biblical times.  I do not claim any such abilities or special connection with God.  I am that ordinary person in the title of this piece.

When He shows us things beyond our comprehension, all we can do is describe them in the context of our present knowledge and culture.  To understand what we are seeing today, it may be helpful to look at what the prophets of the Bible have seen and try to draw some comparisons.

Describing the Indescribable.

God very likely showed visions, such as future events, and heaven (paradise) to the prophets of Biblical times in the same way that He shows them to us today. Like the Moving Hills vision, many of the ancient visions were shrouded in symbolic images. When the visions showed events far into the future, the prophets had a very difficult task telling what they had seen in words that others could understand.

Much like Ezekiel, if we were shown things thousands of years in the future, we would tend to try to describe those things that we did not understand in terms of things we did understand. We would put them in our own terms within the context of our present culture and knowledge.  We would try to describe the indescribable.

Let’s try a test. Look at the passages below as I comment on them and see if you can visualize the cherubim of Ezekiel 10 as an attempt to describe modern helicopters by a man that lived more than 2500 years ago. Consider the following passages.

The rotors of helicopters are moving wings, and if you have ever been near one landing or taking off, you know that they can be very loud.

The sound of the wings of the cherubim could be heard as far away as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when he speaks. Ezek. 10:5 (NIV)

The blades of very large helicopters intersect, much like a wheel intersecting a wheel.

As for their appearance, the four of them looked alike; each was like a wheel intersecting a wheel. Ezek. 10:10 (NIV)

A helicopter can move in any direction without turning.  Also, the twin window panels in the various sides of a helicopter could have looked somewhat like faces on each side of the machine to someone 2500 years ago.

As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the cherubim faced; the wheels did not turn about as the cherubim went.   The cherubim went in whatever direction the head faced, without turning as they went.   Ezek. 10:11 (NIV)

Ezekiel had no words for rotors, but “whirling wheels” would serve very nicely.

I heard the wheels being called “the whirling wheels.” (Ezek. 10:13 NIV)

Helicopters can rise vertically or hover, and the pilots would be in them.

When the cherubim stood still, they also stood still; and when the cherubim rose, they rose with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in them.  Ezek. 10:17 (NIV)

In the following passage, visualize the helicopter’s blades rising as the blades begin lifting the wheels from the ground. Watch as it moves across the landing field to the east gate.

While I watched, the cherubim spread their wings and rose from the ground, and as they went, the wheels went with them. They stopped at the entrance to the east gate of the Lord’s house, and the glory of the God of Israel was above them. Ezek. 10:19 (NIV)

The above passages were from a vision that Ezekiel had almost 600 years before Christ was born. If we had seen that vision today, we would likely have thought “helicopters.” We very likely would have actually seen helicopters in our vision, because that would be an easy image to bring to focus for such an unfamiliar object.

The vision was very likely not about helicopters at all, but could have been. Although we do not know what Ezekiel actually saw, the commentary accompanying the scripture tells us that Ezekiel was describing four angels with interlocking wings, and he was depicting God’s glory leaving the temple.

It is our own knowledge and culture that transforms what he described into helicopters when we read it in the context of our own experiences!

In our own words.

By similar fashion, when we see something in a vision that we have never seen before, we have no choice but to describe them in words that we have at our disposal – words we are familiar with, and images that we are familiar with.

Fortunately my own visions have been of modern structures, hills and of images of people, such as Jesus, so my descriptions are accurate and easily visualized by others. Such was not the case in many Biblical Visions.  On the other hand, my mind might have converted what I saw into the most familiar things I knew.  I’m reporting what I saw and see today when I replay them in my mind.

Symbolic Images.

Biblical visions were often shrouded in symbolic images, perhaps because there were no contemporary scenes that would sufficiently depict the message that God was delivering.

In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream, and visions passed through his mind as he was lying on his bed. He wrote down the substance of his dream. Daniel said: “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me were the four winds of heaven churning up the great sea.”

“Four great beasts, each different from the others, came up out of the sea. The first was like a lion, and it had the wings of an eagle. I watched until its wings were torn off and it was lifted from the ground so that it stood on two feet like a man, and the heart of a man was given to it.” Dan 7:1-4 (NIV)

Deciphering the indecipherable.

According to commentary, the lion with eagle’s wings represents Babylon because of its swift conquests.

Although my visions are easily described in modern day language, their interpretation is not at all easy, and leaves much room for doubt. I saw them, and I can rerun them as often as I like, but unless I understand the meaning of the symbolic images, no accurate interpretation can be made.

Just Ask.

Sometimes the Biblical prophets had a way around this.  Ancient prophets often were able to ask bystanders how to interpret what they saw:

I approached one of those standing there and asked him the true meaning of all this. So he told me and gave me the interpretation of these things: “The four great beasts are four kingdoms that will rise from the earth.”  Dan 7:16-17 (NIV)

I had not been fortunate enough to hear spoken words in my visions so I had to ask through prayer, or depend on scripture to enlighten me. As you will see in The Eulogy, later in this book, when I received words, they nearly frightened me to death!  (Comment by Oldtimer June 2007 – The Eulogy has already been posted – some of these are out of order)

Cryptic Answers.

Sometimes however, angelic answers were cryptic or had ambiguous meanings, especially relating to time. For example, in the passage below, time, times and half a time can mean almost anything from a few years to millennia.

The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard him swear by him who lives forever, saying, “It will be for a time, times and half a time. When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed.”  Dan 12:7 (NIV)

Sealed unto the end.

Sometimes the answers were deliberately sealed as in this passage:

I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked, “My lord, what will the outcome of all this be?” He replied, “Go your way, Daniel, because the words are closed up and sealed until the time of the end.” Dan 12:8-9 (NIV)

The common theme in visions is that they bring a message directly from God:

“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt; I will make you live in tents again, as in the days of your appointed feasts.  I spoke to the prophets, gave them many visions and told parables through them.” Hosea 12:9-10 (NIV)

More to come.

God even tells us that as the End Times approach, He will increase the messages in great numbers.

‘And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. Joel 2:28-31 (NIV)

The next section describes a dream that I experienced just as I was waking up that, at first, seemed to have no relationship to the Vision of The Moving Hills or to healing. As it turned out, it was clearly in keeping with both.   I call it The Comic Strip Dream – next.

Heaven Revealed?

  Heaven Revealed?

In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.  John 14:2 (KJV)

On Thursday, two days after the Jesus Moments in Time vision, I had another remarkable vision.

I began to get bolder, now that Jesus has revealed himself to me.  At prayers I asked that God show me what Heaven looks like.  I have heard so many stories of near-death experiences where people are drawn through a tunnel, and are greeted by long gone friends, relatives and Jesus, and I wanted to see for myself.

I thought that if they were en route to Heaven, Jesus might show me some of that.  I fully expected to see angels, bright lights, long dead friends and relatives.    Would God let me see Heaven?  Would I have to go through a tunnel?  Would the streets be paved with gold?

I have begun to be unafraid of death, being secure in the knowledge that Jesus was really going to be there for me.  At the same time, I am not ready to hurry it along.  I am convinced that God will take me when my work is done, and not before.

I am ready to go anytime and anyway that He chooses!   I have already told our Bible Study class to rejoice when I am gone – throw a party in my name.

It would be nice to know what Heaven really looked like, so full of angels, relatives, and friends that have gone before me.  So I asked God, if it was within His will, to show me Heaven.

The approach.

The vision opened with me in the sky, approaching what appeared to be a two or three-story building from several hundred feet. The building was a reddish color with a grey roof, set against a deep blue shy.

However, my impression of the size of the building was gained only from the relative size, assuming I was close to it.  I didn’t see any trees on the ground or windows, or other features on the building that gave me a clue as to its true size.

I was sailing along without any power, or conscious effort on my part.  No wings, no vehicle, no consciousness of body – just moving toward the building ahead.  I felt like I had the freedom to go where I wanted, but I wanted to go to the building.

As I came closer, the building got bigger and bigger, so my perspective was wrong – it was much bigger than three stories high!  I was approaching from very far away.

As I drew near the building, it grew considerably larger, and it appeared that I was very high in the sky, maybe miles high!  The building was so tall that I could not see the bottom.  I was still slightly above it, but I was still flying toward it and as I did, it became enormous.  Wide as well as tall.

The descent.

I began to descend at the front of the building and it seemed that I took a very long time getting down.  As I continued to approach the building and dropped lower, other building began to stretch from far below toward me and they were also very tall, even though initially they were too small to even see.

The buildings were many miles high, and there were many of them.

Inside – the rooms.

I flew down the front of the taller building toward the bottom, but did not land at the bottom.  Somehow, as I drew near the bottom of the building, I simply appeared in one of the rooms inside of the building.

The room was furnished somewhat like a mansion or maybe a big hotel, with comfortable-looking leather chairs, tables, couches, rugs, fine pictures, and vases on the tables.

I remember one room with a fireplace.  Each room was a comfortable arrangement of the type you would expect to find in the lobby of an exclusive, very fine hotel or perhaps a mansion!

I don’t remember any lamps or lights, but the room was lit normally.  I strolled through several very spacious rooms and had the impression that this was someone’s living suite, and that each person that lived there was similarly provided for.

I never saw any people, however, nor doorways.  Each room flowed into the next one through wide hallways, offset from one another slightly.   In other words, as you reached the end of a room, you could turn one way or another and be facing a wide hallway which might be long or very short.  The wall at the end of the hallway would be part of a wall for the next room.  There were no framed doorways, and the layout was somewhat like a maze with rooms at the corners of each passage..

Each room opened up into other well-decorated rooms.  Some rooms appeared to have patterns like wallpaper and some appeared to have solid colors as if painted.  Ornate rugs covered what appeared to be wooden floors, and there were tables throughout.  The chairs and furniture arrangements were set up for small groups of two to eight people in each area.  I did not get to tour bedrooms, bathrooms, or kitchens if there were any.  Nor did I see any telephones, televisions or radios.

The mansions.

After walking through the area and being satisfied that this was a home that I would enjoy living in, I was suddenly airborne again and outside.  I was above and in front of one of the smaller buildings, but not too far off of the ground.

The grounds were beautiful, and I was admiring the surrounding estate, which was extremely well manicured, perfectly shaped trees, and shrubs of all sizes.  There were green and flowery gardens, winding walkways, and areas enclosed within arbors.

I had the impression that an extended family lived in this mansion.  As I think back, I also saw people strolling the walkways, but they were in the far distance.

The vision ended when I had looked over the smaller mansion for a while.

I did not receive word statements like those that I had during the God Partially Revealed vision.  I didn’t suddenly think to myself,  “A family lives here” or “This is Heaven.”   I did come away with a peace and satisfaction from the impressions that I received during my brief visit.

I had the impression that the first building housed many people, perhaps many hundreds of thousands, comfortably.  There were several very tall buildings in the vision and numerous smaller buildings surrounded by green parks and trees.

I had the impression that the smaller mansions housed larger, more extended families, and the larger buildings housed individuals, couples, and smaller groups in a city-like structure.  Those were only my impressions during the vision.  It almost seems more logical the other way around!

I also had the impression that Heaven was whatever I wanted it to be like on earth, nice furnishing, beautiful estate, comfortable living.   I saw no clouds, no harps, and no angels with wings, and no tunnels of light.

These are the mansions of the scriptures!

In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.  And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.  John 14:2-4 (KJV)

Or as written in the New International Version:

In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.  You know the way to the place where I am going.  John 14:2-4 (NIV)

Since then I have had a few thoughts about the meaning of what I saw.  It seems to me that Heaven was what would have been very comfortable to me.

Perhaps there are different mansions for people with different styles of living.  I also believe that Heaven would be similar to whatever one would be comfortable with within their present culture.

For example, a man or woman of two thousand years ago would probably have been placed in mansions similar to those of the best homes of their time, not of some future time.  I can’t imagine a person of 4000 years ago being placed in a 20th century setting and immediately feeling very comfortable.

Nor can I picture myself being comfortable in a setting of 2000 years ago, or of 1000 years in the future.  If a person is not comfortable, then it wouldn’t be Heaven, would it?

I expect that as civilization progresses, newer mansions are created, and hopefully the inhabitants of the old mansions would have options to move into newer quarters.

I believe, of course, that God knows how mankind will be living in the year 4000, assuming that the end times are that far off.  He could place us into that environment when we are resurrected, but we would probably be as “out of place” in that setting as one of the disciples would be if placed in a 21st century home – in shock.

Just how big is heaven?

And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.

The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls.  The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia in length, and as wide and high as it is long.  Rev 21:10, 15-16 (NIV) The measurement 12,000 stadia is equivalent to about 1,400 miles.  This is the New Jerusalem, but it came down from heaven in this vision of John.

Heaven being bigger than this New Jerusalem, is at least 1,400 miles wide, 1,400 miles long, and 1,400 miles high.  No wonder I could not see the ground from the top of the tallest building!

Tomorrow - The Visit

Two Piece Puzzle Explained

The night after the last Two Piece Puzzle dream, I had another vision, a very remarkable one which I plan to tell you about tomorrow.  It gave me some insight about the Two-Piece Puzzle and a possible explanation for that mystery that I’ll mention now.  The short answer – the coming of Christ released the Holy Spirt on the comman man – you and I.  The Holy Spirt in the Old Testament was bestowed only on special men, and was sometimes withdrawn later.  Christ promised a Counselor – Holy Spirt that would dwell in us always.   Without that Yule Door – the birth of Christ, we would not have the Holy Spirit.

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever– the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.  John 14:16-17 (NIV)

God Partially Revealed

God Partially Revealed

(From my Journal) Friday, February 7, 1997.  I was in the spare bedroom that I use for a quiet place to pray. I think that it was very early in the morning, because I usually don’t get ready for final prayers until about 12:30 A.M. It was almost like I have set an appointment that I wanted to keep at that time. I had begun to notice that when I sit down, a tingling feeling starts at the top of my head and moved down my face and neck.

My front yardSuddenly, I was standing on a knoll in front of a narrow green field bordered by trees across from me. There was a tree immediately to the left and one to the right and slightly forward of me. The field was long in the direction that ran left to right, and narrow across from me.   I believe that it was the field in front of my house, although there were minor differences (see photo). I can stand in my yard at a point where there is a tree to the left of me and one to the immediate right, slightly in front of me, and there would be a corresponding field bordered on the other side by trees, exactly like the one in the vision.  If I stand in my yard at that point, I would be within 10 feet of my front porch, but the growth to my left would be thicker than what I saw in this vision (the photo was taken out of my front door, but framed to better show the baby deer).

It started off as daytime, but I did not see the sun, so I don’t know what time of day. There was full daylight, but the light quickly faded away and the trees were left as if lighted only by moonlight – it took only seconds.  Very soon a strange, slightly glowing and very wispy mist appeared on the ground near the base of the trees across the field. It was moving slowly, and soon filled the trees. It advanced across the field and began approaching me in narrow streams.

When it reached the tree to my right, which was slightly forward of me, it simply passed through it; it did not flow around as I expected. I looked to my left and it was also going through the tree there.

This is God!”

A sudden declaration of fact came over me: “This is God!” Simple, straight-forward and final. My mind’s still voice said: “This is God”. Yet I also knew instantly that He was using the mist only as a means to illustrate, for my simple mind, that He was present and was approaching.  I knew that He was not really a mist, but He was approaching me and chose to illustrate it through something I would understand.  Although the words “This is God!”, were not spoken, I took them as fact, without question. I looked down and the ground below me looked semi-transparent; it was obvious that the mist, representing God, was flowing through the ground, unaffected by the earth or the large buried rocks I could now see.

In a moment God’s presence was flowing through me as well, as if we (the trees, earth and I) were all drifting in an invisible stream of energy.

“God is in me!”

God is in me! That was the second declaration of truth that I received. It happened as soon as I realized that He was passing through me.  The mist was not cold or warm that I can remember. But I knew that what I perceived with my eyes as mist was God revealing to me that he was flowing through me and past me.

Immediately upon saying (within my mind) “God is in me!”, I began to be lifted up! I moved straight up past the trees, and they swiftly fell away. I was not aware of any sensation of gravity, or change in weight as you sense in a fast elevator.  In moments even the earth fell away, and I was lifted to where I could see the entire earth bathed in light in glorious color.

I was much farther out than the pictures seen from the space shuttle, because I could see the entire earth. It was more like the view from the moon when man walked there. I did not just jump from one place to another – it was a continuous motion, but it only took seconds!   I was never afraid of what I was seeing or what was happening, and there was no problem with breathing, no thoughts or concern about it.

photo of earthThe earth appeared below me, now somewhat as if positioned between, but in front of, my feet. The earth was about the size of a full moon. It was beautiful! God was present here too. He began to flow through the entire earth and flowed out the other side as if it were not there.  I looked up and looked all around me. God’s presence was in all of space. Moon, stars, distant galaxies all seemed to be within God’s embrace. The mist, representing God, was not reduced with distance or by perspective. His power and majesty were not reduced by distance.

It became apparent that the very ether of our entire universe was only a small part of God and that God flows through all of it. Although God lifted me high enough that the blue and green earth looked no bigger than a full moon, He did not take me to heaven or to the stars or anything like that.

“We are living in God!”

The thought came suddenly and with conviction: “We are living in God!” As soon as I fully realized that our entire universe was only a fractional part of him, and that we were living in Him, I returned to normal, sitting on the side of my bed! He had revealed the truths I needed to know, and no more.  Looking back, I just knew, without being told, that every star and the remotest galaxy was included in what I was seeing, and I fully understood that God was not a mist, but the mist was used to show me that he was there.  It was apparent to me that the density of the mist did not change (God became no less present) on my scale (a normal person) or the earth’s scale, or the universe’s scale. I saw that he is just as knowing, just as present, just as available and just as powerful on my level as he is on the super scale of the universe. His creation, as we know it, is only a small part of his works, and we occupy him as a small speck somewhere within his being. Yet his infinite nature makes each of us available to him at all times

His infinite nature is somehow very comforting to me.  As an engineer/scientist, I know that any part of infinity is still infinite. His presence in me, and in you, still have the infinite power that powers the universe! We can only use it through Him, as it pleases Him.God did not reveal a form, shape or person to me, nor did he talk to me. He did not physically pick me up in his hand or by the scuff of my neck – he merely revealed what I could comprehend and no more. I am in awe at the enormity of what I saw, and the infinite power that he has. I understand now the meaning of: “God is in us and we are in God”. I needed to find the reference to that, as I didn’t recall it right then.

Here it is:

(1 John 4:16 NIV)

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.

Where is God?  See my next post as the meaning of this vision sinks in on me.
